Concealed Hinge: A hinge attached to the back of a door and to the inside edge of the face frame which cannot be seen on the outside of the cabinet.
Custom Cabinets: These are designed and made specifically for your kitchen. You can choose from a wide selection of sizes, shapes, and finishes. They represent the high end of kitchen quality and cost, and can feature any number of wood types and a wide range of construction and aesthetic detailing.
Dado: A groove cut across the grain of a piece of wood. It is made to join cabinet backs to cabinet bottoms or sides to front frames.
Distressing: A technique where small dents, nicks, scratches, etc., are made in the wood to produce an aged look.
Dovetail: A method of joining wood at corners by the use of interlocking pins and tails. It is commonly used for making very strong joints in wooden drawers.
Drawer Stop: A device installed in a cabinet to limit the extent the drawer can be pulled out.
Dry Brushing: A technique applying a very dark stain to highlight the distressing.
End Panel: The outside vertical cabinet side that supports the horizontal parts. It is often referred to as cabinet side panels, sides or ends.
Face Frame: The supporting wood frame attached to the front of the cabinet box to give it structural rigidity.
Framed Construction: A cabinet box that has a face frame. It resembles a flat, empty picture frame attached to the front. Doors are secured to this frame.
Frameless Construction: A cabinetry style in which doors are attached directly to the sides of the cabinet box with hidden hinges. This technique tends to favor a more contemporary look, and it is a hallmark of European-style cabinets.
Full Access Drawer Guide: Cabinet drawer glides allow the drawer to be pulled out for access to the back of the drawer.
Full Extension Drawer Guide: Cabinet drawer glides allow for the drawer to be pulled completely outside the cabinet to give access to the full depth of the drawer.
Full Overlay: Door styles that allow approximately 3/16" of face frame exposed around the sides, tops and bottoms of the doors. Wall cabinets have 7/16" exposed at the tops and bottoms of the doors.
Furniture Board: A board that is manufactured using wood particles, adhesives and resins under extremely high pressure to bond the material together.
Glazing: A finishing process purposely creating an uneven, inconsistent look by applying an accent stain over the entire door and then wiping off, leaving some light to dark tones in the corners, door grooves and wood grains creating an overall glazed finish.
Highlighting: A technique removing some of the dark stain between the grain to highlight the base color.
Inset Doors/Drawers: Doors and drawer fronts that are recessed to fit flush with the cabinet frame when closed.
Kiln-Dried: A process which removes excess moisture from wood to minimize the shrinkage and swelling of wood.
MDF: An acronym for "Medium Density Fiberboard". It is man-made from wood fibers which are compressed together with adhesive.
Miter: A joint made by fitting together two angled pieces to form a right angle.
Mortise: A rectangular hole cut into a piece of wood to accept a tenon.
Mortise and Tenon Joint: A joinery technique where the tenon from one board fits into the mortise of another.
Mullion: The vertical strip between cabinet doors.
Onlay: A decoratively carved wood ornament applied to cabinet surfaces.
Overlay Doors/Drawers: Doors and drawer fronts that overlap the face frame when closed -- either partially or fully. These are the most common stock style.
Padding: A technique that brightens the color and gives depth to the finish.
Plywood: A material made of thin layers of wood glued and pressed together.
Rail: The horizontal part of a raised panel door.
Raised Panel: A term describing a door style with a thick center panel.
Recessed Panel: A term describing a door style with a thinner panel inserted into the grooves of a wood door frame giving a "recessed" appearance.
RTA: An acronym for "Ready to Assemble." These cabinets come in a range of quality levels. They are an economical option for people who can assemble and install their own cabinets.
Semi-custom cabinets: Factory-produced in common sizes, these cabinets include special adaptations, such as stained-glass inserts, specially designed storage features, and extensions that fill small gaps in the layout. Custom and semi-custom cabinets are made-to-order and require payment up front. However, with semi-custom cabinets, you make your choices from the manufacturer's inventory of standard sizes and types (with widths in 3-inch increments) rather than having them made to your specifications.
SKU: An acronym for "Stock Keeping Unit". Every item, size and part is identified as a SKU.
Spatter: A speckling technique applying color stain over a cabinet door leaving small spatters of slightly darker color on the cabinets.
Stile: The vertical pieces of frames, such as face frames and door frames.
Stock: This term refers to factory-made cabinets in standard sizes and shapes kept in a manufacturer's or retailer's inventory. To reduce warehousing space, choices are kept to a minimum with a few common sizes, one or two wood species, and so on. Tenon: A protrusion from a board that fits into a matching mortise to form a joint. Thermofoil: A durable, scratch resistant rigid vinyl that is thermally formed and sealed to MDF to provide a strong, durable surface, resistant to most household wear.
Toe Kick: A term describing the recessed area at the bottom of base, tall and vanity cabinets. It is also referred to as a toe space. Finished material attached to it is referred to as toe kick or toe space cover.

Before you begin your journey into the world of a kitchen remodel there are some things you should know. So many articles are written on how to plan, design, and hire a contractor for your kitchen remodel. What almost none of these articles tell you is what to expect. Remodeling a kitchen is one of the most intense projects one can embark on. There are a multitude of decisions to make and details to review. Using my experience from being involved in hundreds of kitchen remodels I’ll try to give you some advice on what to expect. The first of many steps will be deciding on a budget. You will want to make sure you have an amount of money you are willing to spend. This figure, your budget, needs to include everything you plan for the kitchen as well as unforeseen expenditures. So when it comes time that you get your prices be sure there is room left for added expenses. Keep in mind also that when your remodel is complete you’re going to want new utensils, dishes, towels, etc. Even if this is going to be a do it yourself project you’ll probably want to visit either a kitchen showroom or a big box store kitchen center to get some design ideas and layouts. At this point some questions will need to be addressed. Things like the type and style of cabinets and the types and size of appliances. This is rarely a one step process and don’t expect to get the design down in one shot. Take some ideas and in the comfort of your home analyze them. Make sure all the measurements are correct. Get a feel for where the essentials will be located, like the sink and fridge and stove, and make sure the layout feels right. Now is the time to refine your decisions. If the layout needs some adjustments, that needs to be done first. Once you have planned your layout and chosen your cabinets you may be excited to get started but don’t jump the gun. Try to work out as many details as you can at this point. The more time you spend planning now will mean less time fixing problems that arise when you try to make changes on an already started project. Before your order for cabinets is placed make sure you covered all the bases. If you have glass doors will there be glass shelves? If you are going to install under cabinet lighting will you need a light rail? Is there crown molding and how much do you need? Is it going to be used in the room as well as on top of the cabinets? What side panels do you need or any other wood related to the cabinets? The reason all of this is so important is if you are missing something you need from the cabinet company, it can cause delays later when you need to reorder. Some cabinet orders can take weeks. The last thing you want to find out after you have begun is your going to be delayed. Now that you have made your choices and picked a design and cabinet and all your appliances, you will need to find out what the lead-time is for all the merchandise needed to arrive. Usually this is about 6 weeks but varies. Now you can proceed to the next step. If this is a DIY project and you have no experience installing kitchens I would recommend at this stage you read everything about it you can get your hands on. This is no easy task and after investing thousands of dollars in cabinets you won’t want to mess up the install. I would not recommend this for a weekend project. Unlike the popular home makeover shows on TV today, a kitchen generally does not get installed in 2 or 3 days. A much more likely scenario is 2 or 3 weeks if all goes well and longer if there are any snags. If you intend on being the GC on the project and don’t have experience with it, I would again recommend that you do as much reading on the subject that you can. Do not attempt this unless you have very strong organizational skills and have no problems making tough decisions. If this is the course you are taking your work is just beginning. You’ll have to now find and secure all the trades needed for your kitchen remodel. In most cases you will need to find the following trades: Demo company, Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician, Tile installer, and Cabinet installer. There could be other trades involved depending on the circumstances surrounding your project such as Alarm installer or an HVAC contractor. Just to give an example of how difficult it can be to GC a job like this imagine finding and then scheduling all these trades. Now imagine you did all that work and the day comes for the plumber to show up and he doesn’t. You can’t get a hold of him for days. Now all the trades you scheduled after him need to be rescheduled. It’s the busy season and they are three weeks out at least. I am sure you can see what a stressful situation this could become. It doesn’t just take a bad sub-contractor. It could be that when the walls are opened there is a problem such as termite damage or a leaky pipe or a structural problem. Any of these things now means a delay that gets passed on to all the subs meaning a massive rescheduling. If you choose to have a General Contractor do the entire job you can avoid some of this headache. A GC who has a good working relationship with his subs will be able to resolve scheduling conflicts much more easily if a situation arises. Of course this does come with a price. A GC will generally be adding a percentage on every aspect of the job. This is usually in the area of 25% but varies with each individual contractor. In my opinion a good general contractor is worth every dime and will make the job go more smoothly. Unless you have a great deal of time on your hands this is the way to go. Now that everything has been decided and you know who is doing the installation, here is what you can expect. Since any good kitchen install should include a complete gut of the room, a demolition crew will first visit you. Make sure that before they arrive you have removed anything you care to keep from the kitchen. A good tip is to buy some plastic drop cloths or use some old sheets. Cover things like furniture in nearby rooms. You are going to see dust everywhere for several weeks and this can save you some cleaning headaches later. If you have a basement below the demo area that is open, cover anything there as well. Another tip is on any walls in the surrounding rooms from the kitchen, take things like paintings or nick knack shelves down. Sometimes just the vibration from the work can knock stuff off the walls. At this point you will most likely want to set up a temporary kitchen somewhere. A dining room is a good choice. Having a small microwave, coffee pot and a toaster and possibly a hot plate should suffice. A small fridge or your existing one moved into the room. You most likely won’t be able to run all these appliances at once unless you have some dedicated receptacle circuits in that area. Stock up on some paper plates and disposable cups to minimize having to wash dishes in your bathroom sink which is usually not too convenient. The demolition should be a one-day affair but in some cases can extend to two days. The next step will be the carpenter if there are any structural preparations such as new windows or doors or walls being relocated or removed. If any of this work needs to be done the time will depend on how extensive it is. Anywhere from one day to three days is about average. This is also the stage where any hidden problems may come into view. Damage to existing structure like termite or water damage will now be visible. Pipes or wiring that will have to be relocated is another problem you may encounter at this stage. If you are going to be faced with any extra costs on the job, this is the most likely place they will arise. Once the carpentry work is done or if there is none, the next trade in should be the plumber to do his rough in. The plumbing should also be a one-day job but can be 2 or 3 if there is a lot of plumbing. After the plumbing the next trade in should be the Electrician to do his rough in. Again this is usually a one-day job but can extend to 2 or 3 if the work is extensive. One small tip when these trades come in. Before they leave just take a quick stock and make sure you still have running water and heat and that lights and power work. Sometimes workers in a rush will forget the most basic things like turning the water or power back on. Checking before they go can save a headache of getting them back by days end. If the work is being inspected this would be the time for the rough inspections or structure, plumbing and electrical. Any other trades required such as an Alarm installer or HVAC contractor will be at this stage. If not the next one in is the carpenter again, he will need to insulate and sheetrock. If you are getting a tile floor installed it is usually installed at this stage. Be sure the right tile is on the job. I have seen the wrong tile installed because the customer never looked and wasn’t home when it was installed. Not a pretty sight. The tile installation can be 2 days or a week depending on how much area is being tiled. Be sure to follow all instructions about not walking on the floor at this point. After the tile is installed the spackling and taping should be done if it is not done at this point. I like to see the room painted at this point and touched up later but your painter may want to wait until the job is complete which works fine as well. Now the cabinets are ready to be installed. This job is usually at least three days but can extend to more than a week if it is a large kitchen with a lot of details. Once the kitchen is installed the next step depends on the counter material. If it is a laminate top and installed now then it’s off to the finishing steps. If it is a stone or other material that needs to be made a template will need to be made. This is generally a few hours at most. The countertop is usually promised in 2-4 weeks time for delivery and installation. Sometimes during the period of waiting for the counters, the other trades can come and do some of the finish work. They will not however really be able to finish until the counters are in and in some cases even the backsplash is in if it is a tile splash. After the counter is installed the tile backsplash can be installed if that is the material being used. At this point all the trades can come in and finish. One or two days for each trade are about the average. The scope I have given you here is all based on the average job. Take into consideration that there may be a day or two here and there where no one is working on the job. Since a kitchen remodel has so many variables the scheduling may need to change and if it does there may be more down days than average. As each trade comes in to do their work, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most of us like what we do and love to talk about it with our customers. Try to make it easy for the trades to do their work by making the house accessible. Keep areas they may have to get to clear like the water main, boiler, main electrical panel and attics or basements. If it’s possible, have parking as close to the house as possible. If you have pets or small children, keep them out of the workers path and work area. There are too many dangerous activities for them to be in these areas. While the work is being done don’t turn on any water valves, gas valves or circuit breakers without asking first. They could be off for a very good reason and could cause a dangerous situation. By planning ahead and knowing what to expect, your kitchen remodel can be a very rewarding experience and not the nightmare that it can turn into when there is none.
Where do I start? Having decided that your kitchen is in need of a revamp you now have to plan what features it will have. It may be that you require more work and cupboard space. Your existing appliances may not offer you the specifications you require and your lighting may be inadequate. Whatever your needs you need to identify the design that best suits your needs and here we'll attempt to assist you with our view on how best to achieve this. Kitchen layouts fall into four categories: Galley or corridor - For narrow rooms with an entry and exit point at opposite ends. One wall kitchen - More popular in apartment dwellings where space is at a premium L-shaped - If the existing room is interrupted by doors entering on two adjoining walls but wide enough to accommodate corner cabinets, an L-shaped kitchen is the most appropriate configuration. U-shaped kitchens are suitable for rooms uninterrupted on three elevations and in some cases, if the room is wide enough, the U shape may return as a peninsular or against the fourth entry wall Add to the above the ability to incorporate an island configuration in your room and you have ability to determine which style of kitchen best suits your room. Most importantly in the order of priority, recording the dimensions of your room is the first task. Measuring up for your kitchen Next up is measuring your room in a way that will ensure easy transfer of your plans to paper. Proceed as follows Measure ceiling heights - Cabinets come in a variety of heights and your floor to ceiling height will determine which height cabinet is best suited to your room. Measure up your windows and doors - in addition measure the distances from each side of the aperture to the adjacent walls, from the lower sill to the floor and from the ceiling to the upper reveal of the window. The rules here also apply for any protrusions such as boxing in or pillars. When measuring lengths between walls hold the tape measure 600mm from the each end to simulate how the cabinet fronts will sit. This, of course, is easier if you are measuring over existing cabinetry and a centre mark will provide more accuracy if you measure to it from both sides and add the measurements. Check for plumb (vertical level) - It is advisable to rectify any defective plastering prior to the installation of cupboards and where a right angled corner wall cupboard is being installed it is essential that the relevant plastering is square and plumb to ensure a satisfactory alignment of the installation. You risk affecting the correct alignment of extractor and hob if attention is not given to out of plumb walls. Check floor levels - use a long spirit level to determine the level of your floor and, using the "600mm rule"(measuring this distance from the wall to simulate the plinth), will determine if any rectification or floor-levelling compound is required prior to installation. The criteria for an acceptable finish is in your own hands but I would suggest that a difference in level of more than 15mm will require pre-levelling before installing cabinets. Services - determine the dimension of any services that are sited in your kitchen such as mains water pipes, soil pipes or mains electricity/gas supplies. Again, measure their relative distance from both elevations and detail these in your plan before commencing design. Transferring them to your plan will avoid any complications with appliance obstruction. Cabinetry can always be altered to accommodate services but appliances can't. Checking your corner for square - As the standard worktop size is 600mm, a square template approximately this size will give you the best indication of a whether your corner is square. A shelf or purpose made square placed against the corner will determine any rectification work required before installation. Of course worktops can be scribed to suit the contours of the wall but it is advisable to achieve as square as possible a finish for aesthetic purposes. Replacement doors and worktops Of course, some of the above can be ignored if you are simply replacing doors and worktops but you will need to detail the position of existing hinge holes to make for easier replacement. Here are the rules to make for easier installation. Measure the centres between hinge holes on your existing doors. To make this easier, mark a pencil line at the back of the hinge inside the cabinets using a straight edge to ensuring each line is central to the hinge. Measure the distance between the points and record this in millimetres. Next you will need to measure from the bottom of each door to the centre of the bottom hinge. Again, use a straight edge to mark the centre line of the hinge, this time on the door itself and measure from the bottom of the door to the marked line. Measure the door size in mm and record it's opening configuration - left hand or right hand hinge. Compile a list of your doors, detailing the door as a base, larder or wall unit fascia. If a door is integrated measuring will be difficult without removal of the appliance but a pattern may emerge showing that all the doors are consistently equidistant between hinge holes. If this is the case then it's more than likely that integrated doors are bored similar and record it as such. A good tip when measuring hinge hole centres is to commence measuring from the 100mm mark on your tape measure. Align it with the pre-marked pencil line and measure to the line marking the next hinge. This will offer a greater accuracy but don't forget to subtract 100mm from the measurement before recording it to paper. Worktops will present less of a problem and all that is required is to detail the size in width, length and depth.
Before talking to any contractors the first thing to do is create a budget for the project. Without a budget you will be flying blind and may end up over spending. Having a tight budget will also help you make decisions about what kind of fixtures, and materials to purchase. Most products have a wide price range and having a budget will help keep you in line when making buying decisions. After you have your budget dialed in get three written estimates from three different contractors. Be sure the estimate is complete; getting a “written” estimate on the back of a business card is not a sign of a good contractor. Getting three estimates will enable you to compare prices from different contractors. Reliableremodeler.com is a great service that will help you get free estimates from quality contractors for free. Take the time to talk with each contractor and get a feel for which one you will be most comfortable working with and having in your home. Be sure and pay attention to things like who shows up on time and who is prepared to talk about your project. If a contractor shows up late to your appointment chances are they will show up late when working on your project. While you are in the process of selecting a contractor it is a good idea to make sure they have the proper license, insurance, and bonding. All three of these items are in place to protect homeowners. Working with a contractor who isn’t licensed or doesn’t have the proper insurance might come back to haunt you. A good contractor will show you copies of these documents when they present your written estimate. The next step is to check the references of the contractor you are leaning towards selecting. Be sure to ask specific questions about their experience with the contractor. “Did the contractor show up on time?” “Did the contractor clean up after themselves?” If you want to be more aggressive you can ask the contractor for the names and numbers of their last three jobs and call those instead of their handpicked references. This will provide a more realistic overview of the contractors daily work habits and skills. The last step is to select your contractor and have them provide you a timeline for the completion of the project. Having a timeline will help ensure your project is completed in a timely manner.

Good Kitchen Space A well-designed kitchen layout means function and flow. Layout works together with appliance placement to create a comfortable, workable environment. Good design dictates that the refrigerator be near work space and food preparation counters, and sinks be placed next to dishwashers for easy loading. Stoves want workspace and handy storage for cooking accessories, cupboards for pots and pans, and drawers for utensils.
Cabinet installations follow the basic rule of carpentry—the final results should be straight, square, and strong. In new construction, subfloors are usually in good condition and provide a sturdy, flat surface for base cabinets to rest on. The same goes for newly erected walls-today's engineered lumber products combined with good construction practices typically mean walls will be plumb and true. In older homes, floors are more likely to have high and low spots, and walls, floors, and corners may not meet at perfect 90-degree angles. Your cabinet installer will remedy minor problems with a few common tools and a little ingenuity. Locating the highest point on the floor. No two jobs are ever alike, but most base cabinet installations are relatively straightforward. The first step is to identify the highest area on the floor and mark it on the wall. One technique is to use a shims and a carpenter's level. The rear of the base cabinet must be level with the front. If the highest point on the floor is closer to the wall, the front of the cabinet must be raised with shims. If the highest point on the floor is farther away from the wall, the rear of the cabinet must be raised to the equal height. A line is scribed to mark the top of the cabinets. Drawing a straight line on the wall to mark the top of the base cabinets will assure that all of the base cabinets are installed at the identical height and the countertop will have a flat mounting surface. A 2x4 and a level are commonly used to make sure the line is perfectly straight. The standard cabinet height in the U.S. is 34-1/2-inches. Note: The height of the top line should be measured from the highest point on the floor. Cabinets are clamped together before fasteners are installed. With base cabinets, many installers secure all the cabinets to each other before attaching them to the wall. Standard bar clamps can be used to make sure each cabinet is secure before installing fasteners, but professional installers often use a tool called the "Cabinet Claw." Its jaws pull the face frames of two cabinets together, and a front clamp aligns them flush with each other. Shims and levels are used to position the cabinets. Before securing the cabinets to the wall, the installer will check to make sure that the cabinets are perfectly aligned with the line scribed on the wall, and that they are perfectly vertical from top to bottom, and level across the top. Using two levels simplifies the process. Shims (tapered lengths of wood, usually pine) are used to raise areas of the base cabinets off the floor or away from a wall into a level position. Whenever using a shim to adjust the cabinet where it meets a wall, it is always placed over a stud. Three-inch screws fasten the cabinets to the wall. Once the cabinets are level, they can be secured to the wall. Fasteners should always be driven through the cabinet and into wall studs. Wherever shims are used, a fastener must be driven straight through them so they do not slip out of place causing the cabinets to shift. The final step is to install the doors, drawers and hardware. Depending on the style of cabinet, the hinges may be hidden (installed on the inside of the frame) or visible. Some cabinets come with supplied hinges and are pre-drilled. To secure hinges on cabinets that are not pre-drilled, many installers make a template to assure that all of the hinges line up across the face frames of the cabinets.
Custom cabinets offer every option imaginable. Here, the refrigerator has a custom enclosure, and the farmhouse-style sink has a custom-built base. In-Stock and Semi-Stock Cabinets Ready-to-assemble open-frame and pre-assembled cabinets are easy and convenient to purchase and install. Available in-stock at most large home centers, these no-frill cabinets typically feature engineered wood construction with a melamine finish and steel-sided drawers. Style and finish choices are limited, but it is the most economical way to go. In-stock cabinets cost less to purchase, but professional installation is still an option. Semi-stock cabinets let the homeowner create a more personalized space, but often require four to six weeks for delivery. Home centers offer showroom displays of semi-custom cabinets while staff designers help customers visualize their kitchen space and design a plan to meet their needs. Semi-custom cabinets feature higher quality workmanship and materials than in-stock units, and offer a greater selection of design features like plate racks, corner cupboards, sliding shelves, or pantries. Styles and finishes vary widely, but semi-stock cabinets are typically have sides constructed of engineered wood or plywood and solid wood doors or faces. Oak, maple, cherry, and hickory are all popular cabinet woods, but veneers over plywood are another option. Cabinets may be open or framed, but drawers are usually constructed from solid wood and are dovetail or dowel assembled. In-stock and semi-stock cabinets are built to industry specs. Standard base cabinets built in the U.S. are 34-1/2-inches high and 24-inches deep. Wall cabinets, except those above a range hood or refrigerator, are 30-inches high and 12-inches deep. Cabinet sides are typically _ of an inch. Some manufacturers will customize a semi-stock cabinet by giving the buyer the ability to decrease the depth of a base or wall cabinet. Widths increase in three-inch increments from six to 48 inches. Trim work or filler is used to make up the difference when cabinet measurements do not fit the space exactly. Custom Cabinets Custom and some semi-custom cabinets can be had in any color under the sun. Here, bright colors that would make a dramatic statement in any room. When it comes to custom cabinetry, your budget is the only limit. A custom-built cabinet is not constructed until it is ordered. Most people assume that custom work will be the most expensive option, this is not always the case. Upper-end semi-stock cabinets often cost the same as basic custom cabinetry. For example, if the only issue is cabinet width, a custom unit can be built to the homeowner's specs using engineered wood, which costs far less than solid wood but still allows for a custom fit. If expense is not an issue, custom-built cabinets provide the best of all worlds to the homeowner with discriminating taste. Choices include hand-selected wood, reclaimed wood, and exotic woods like mahogany. Cabinetmakers will even match the paint or finish of an existing hutch or corner cupboard. Homeowners can select everything from glass doors with the look of authentic hand-blown glass to inset doors with decorative beading. Pie-cut corner cabinets, full extension glides on drawers, and Super-Susans, provide added convenience. Custom cabinetmakers vary in their delivery time. Depending on the complexity of the job, a homeowner should allow six to 12 weeks for construction and delivery. Installation takes time, too. Some jobs require up to six months and much on-site time.

There are two priorities when planning a studio apartment kitchen, the first is to conceal the cooking area with doors or curtains when it is not in use. The second is to eliminate cooking odors with a first rate kitchen exhaust fan. If you have young children, it is important that you have a well equipped kitchen. Children are often under foot, so it is important that there is ample space in your kitchen. If you will be working in the kitchen and watching them at the same time, the room must have sufficient floor and table space safely away from the cooktop or sink.You'll want lots of counter space for family projects like baking cookies and plentiful well stocked cabinets to satisfy your growing brood. Once you have hired an architect, he/she will measure the space for the kitchen and produce a survey drawing, to show the area that already exists. Then, after talking with your architect the two of you should agree upon style, function, and budget for the project. This agreement then becomes the basis for the production drawings which the architect will now begin to draw up. These drawings show how the finished kitchen will look; and a specification, which not only describes how it is to be built but includes such details as a start up and completion date, which parts of the house the builders may use and how and a payment schedule. Then it is your architects job to shepherding the plans through the proper channels for permitting. Once any changes that have been made are incorporated into the drawings, the architect then gets the costs from the builders. The architect must then recommend a builder and a price. It is possible to deal with the architect in only the early stages of the design process, and then to deal directly with the builder. This will reduce the architect's fee but may end up costing you more money in the end. With his expertise, the architect is often a better judge of when money is being spent wisely, can communicate more clearly with the builder, and has the inside track on competitively priced products and services. Choosing a Builder You should choose a builder based on personal recommendations, previous work, and reputation. Select a building company that is just large enough to tackle your project. This way the boss will take a personal interest in your project. Builders Since the kitchen is the heart of your home, you will not be happy if you are forced to live with builders in the house. If you are purchasing a new home, it is wise to have all the building work done before you move in. If you are remodeling the current kitchen, it is smart to plan the building during a vacation so that you do not conflict with the builders. Remember: the more pre-planning you do, the fewer problems that will occur. Any change that you make to the original plan will cause a delay, and generally speaking, time is money. If you are dealing directly with the builder, and not through an architect, it ibe sure to give all directions to the contractor in charge and let hime work with the sub-contractors. If you do run into delays and additional costs, make sure that everything is agreed to in writing. Doing it Yourself If you have the time and energy, remodeling your kitchen can be fun and a money-saver. However, an unskilled operator working only on the evenings and weekends may take a long time to complete a relatively short project. Once you have settled on where you would like to position the stove/oven, refrigerator, and so on, add electric outlets and lights to your plan. Next, decide and note the floor and wall finishes. The completed drawing must then be shown to the local building inspector. Finally, it is important to write down exactly when and how everything will be done. New products and tools have made it easier for do-it-yourselfers to work quickly and well, and there are also some excellent instruction manuals and interactive software now available. Do the Paperwork Today there are regulations governing even the smallest building projects. It is vital to take your plans directly to the people concerned. The planning department needs to know such things like whether you will be adding another room, or if you live in a conservation area they will need to know if you will be altering the exterior.You must inform the building inspector if you are altering any of the walls or windows in your home. The holidays bring more people, more cooking, and more demand to the kitchen. A well-designed kitchen should balance space for family visits or office parties with cozy space for breakfast. The planning phase should anticipate future needs, but only living in the space can tell how well it succeeds. Design Plan The Rowley Victorian remodel showed how good planning made for a great reality. Homeowner David Masher says he and his wife Jeanne “took notes on how we were using the kitchen and what issues we had with it.” It’s important to know how your space is used on a daily basis and at its busiest times to develop an effective plan. “You have to understand your needs and how to communicate them,” Masher says. In the Rowley house, the architect decided an entire wall should be removed, which required redistribution of weight loads—something that could not have been done had they undertaken the project alone. The Rowley kitchen was redesigned with both intimacy and entertaining in mind. Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining area opened up almost half of the downstairs. To create intimacy, an exposed beam separates the dining area for small gatherings and the kitchen’s center island is perfect for family breakfast. A low range hood also makes the space feel smaller when sitting at the center island. Thirty-seven lights allow a multitude of options for making the space feel larger or smaller. Designing for Traffic Flow To test their new space, the Mashers hosted Thanksgiving for seventeen people—a challenge for any kitchen. Preparing the meal was easier in the new space because “the cooking was split into three parts: Someone to keep the food warm in the warming drawer, another to do the actual cooking of the gravy, turkey, and everything, and another to put everything onto plates,” Masher says. The center island provided enough room for three prep cooks and space for arriving guests to chat while others circulated on the far side of the island. Don’t underestimate the benefits of being able to mingle with everyone at the same time, whether they are chef or guest. Plenty of traffic space makes for a smoother party flow. In the Masher’s home, that flow is also enhanced by the addition of a mudroom, where guests can hang their coats and get settled before venturing into the party area. Guests can visit with people preparing food, since the kitchen and entertaining spaces are not separate as they had been in the old design. “You’re able to see and smell the food as it’s being prepared and still ask after Aunt Mildred,” Masher says. Refacing cabinets means adding new doors and sprucing up the framework that holds them. What you get in return is a whole new look for less than half the cost of new cabinets. Existing structures are left standing, no cabinets are ripped out, and the layout remains the same. A typical refacing job involves replacing the cabinet doors, the drawer fronts, and the hardware. Matching wood, paint, or laminate veneer is used to resurface any exposed cabinet framework. New veneers can also be purchased to cover existing doors or surrounding framework to give a just-installed appearance. Door Fronts The cabinet door is the most visible feature of a kitchen cabinet. When replacing old doors, one should consider both door style and door composition. Style options on most doors will include raised or recessed panel doors, flat fronts, bead board, glass front or partial lite, and a classic deco-form door. The three most common door style options are raised panel, recessed panel, or slab. A slab is a flat door with no raised or recessed profile. Flat-panel doors and drawers are simple and chic, while a framed glass door offers a stylish window to the contents within. This is a standard European or concealed hinge used with a face frame adapter plate to give openings up to 170 degrees. Wood door options include the classic U.S. species of Oak, Maple, Hickory, Birch, Pine, Alder, Cherry, and Poplar. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and metal are also viable door options, but a homeowner will want to take care that the doors, fronts, and cabinet veneers match or complement one another. Hinges A standard refacing job includes replacement of old hinges and hardware. On frameless cabinets, which have no face frame, the hinges will attach to the door and the side or end panels of the cabinet box. Framed cabinets, with a frame around the front edges, feature hinges attached to the door and the frame. There are two basic types of hinges—traditional and European. Traditional, or exposed, hinges include barrel hinges, which are the self-closing variety. These spring-loaded hinges are fully exposed and rest on the front frame of a framed cabinet. Knife hinges are partially embedded hinges that are either fully or almost fully visible on the face of the cabinet frame. These types of hinges provide a full 180 degrees for door opening. Measure Before You Order Kitchen cabinet refacing is a popular do-it-yourself endeavor, and begins by taking measurements of door and drawer openings to determine the material dimensions. For framed cabinets, a general rule of thumb is to have cabinet doors that overlap the openings by a 1/2 inch all the way around. If a single door is going to cover each cabinet, add 1 inch to the height and width of each opening—this will ensure the 1/2 inch overlap. For a double-door closure, add 1 inch to the opening width, divide by two and subtract 1/16 inch. This last calculation will leave 1/8 inch between the two doors for unimpeded door action. For frameless cabinet doors, the best step is to measure the old doors and round down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Width and height of drawer front openings should be taken as well, and all measurements should be taken to the nearest 1/16 or 1/8 inch, depending on the company supplying the replacement materials and their guidelines for measuring. When using measurements to order doors and materials, always list the width first. And, when you install your new doors, always check for level and plumb. Concealed hinges—also called European hinges—are screwed into recesses in the backs of the door and the side panel or face frame of the cabinet and are not visible when the door is closed. Most concealed hinges are self-closing, easily adjusted, and limit the door opening to 110 degrees. It is important to keep in mind that the type of cabinet usually determines the type of hinge. A framed cabinet with partially overlaying doors and exposed frames will usually have knuckle, knife, or concealed hinges. Full overlay doors on frameless cabinets will always have concealed hinges. Finish Options and Costs The three basic finish options when refacing are—plastic laminate, rigid thermofoils (RTF), and wood. RTF, the least expensive of the three, is a popular option because it's durable, has a wood-like appearance, is budget-friendly cost, and is easy-to-clean. RTF is applied to medium-density fiberboard (MDF) using heat and a special adhesive that is applied under intense pressure in a vacuum. The resulting RTF veneer, as it is called, is exceedingly durable and can be made to look just like a bright painted surface or natural wood. RTF's inherent malleability makes it versatile and allows it to be shaped and molded to a host of panel and door styles. Plastic laminates, are slightly more expensive than RTF veneers, and not as durable. Plastic laminates come in more color options than RTF but, because laminates cannot be shaped and molded, they are limited to plainer cabinet door styles. RTF, on the other hand, can be used for raised panel, cathedral, and arched door styles, among others. Wood finishes have advanced to the point that homeowners no longer need to regularly wax the surfaces of the finished cabinetry. Durable heat-catalyzed polyurethane finishes do not require refinishing. Care might include regular dusting and, at most, a once-a-year furniture-grade polishing. Superior finishes can feature a number of qualities, including sealers to protect the wood and ultra violet inhibitors to resist the fading effects of light exposure. Refacing can include appliances as well as cabinets. Matching or complemetary faces can be purchased for some refrigerators, stove hoods, and dishwashers. The cost of a refacing job will depend on the size of the project, the materials, and options, but a typical refacing job generally costs between $1000-$5000. This is compared to a typical kitchen remodeling project, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. To determine the projected cost of a refacing project, some companies will give a price per unit. Count each cabinet door, drawer, end panel, and false front as a unit, and add up the kitchen's units for a total unit count. Price per unit can range from as low as $150 to as high as $250, depending on options and material selection. Using a high-end wood door will up the costs, while a less expensive RTF veneer might be a more budget-friendly option. Choosing Wood A refacing project done in wood can cost up to 25 percent more than laminate and represents a significant upgrade. Woods can be ordered natural, stained, painted, or paint ready. Customers will also need to decide on the desired finish for their cabinets. Kitchen cabinet refacing is a suitable job for the individual with basic carpentry skills. Remember to repair any damage by filling, sanding, and sealing any holes or voids before installing the new faces. Take the time to measure, and always check doors and cabinets for level and plumb. A standard refacing job may take up to a week for the do-it-yourselfer, or as little as two days for professionals. The new look will last for years.
A kitchen remodel is no small undertaking, so serious consideration should be given to hiring a professional kitchen designer. Designers are paid to plow through your magazine clippings, wish lists, and kitchen complaints to present design options that fit your lifestyle, budget, and space requirements. Create a Project Wish List Designers expect a wish list. This can include magazine clippings of kitchens, appliances, countertop surfaces, colors, textures, and flooring. The homeowner should make a list of kitchen items that should stay and features that work. The homeowner should also provide a list of things that must go or be changed. Doors may not open, chairs may not fit, your back may be to your guests while you chop or work at the sink. “We are all always conscious of the negative things in our lives,” says Leslie Roosevelt, a designer for Gilday Renovations, in Maryland, “but when something works well, we take tend to take it for granted and don’t give it as much notice.” What a homeowner likes about the current kitchen is just as important as what is not liked. Add clippings, desired appliances, and specific features, and a sketch of your dream kitchen emerges for the designer. Bring the gift of compromise to your kitchen remodel. A designer’s job is to balance the wish list with the spatial and financial limitations and the lifestyle of the family. A homeowner’s job is to help the designer come up with a plan that satisfies as many wishes as the reality will allow. “We like to know where the homeowner can make compromises,” adds Roosevelt. Where compromises can be made will be one of those important questions for the homeowner to answer. If something on the list cannot be sacrificed, it is no longer a wish, it’s an objective. If the island with a prep sink is an absolute must, or handicapped accessibility if required, the designer will have a fixture or goal around which to plan the rest of the kitchen. Understand Space and Budget The two biggest limiting factors for a kitchen remodel are the available space and budget. “‘Does the space exist?’ is one of the first questions I ask myself when I go to the site,” Roosevelt says. Size and access limitations will restrict the configuration and layout of the new kitchen. Current entrances will limit configuration, as will the traffic flow of the present space. A kitchen that sits between an exterior entrance and the rest of the house must allow adequate space for people coming and going. “The physical restraints of the space are one of the biggest limitations,” says Gary Courtright, a designer for Carmel Kitchen and Baths, Etc., in Carmel, California who has worked on kitchens of all sizes “the proper sizing of appliances, cabinets, and other features to the space available.” Homeowners must also operate within a budget. “We find that most homeowners are grossly misinformed as to the cost of a kitchen remodel,” Courtright says. Courtright’s firm gives clients a guestimate sheet that gives insight into the cost of a kitchen remodel, listing the average price per square foot for things like countertops, flooring, and the various prices for appliances and cabinetry. Homeowners should be clear on how much they can spend and share this number with the designer. Fit the Kitchen to the Activities The kitchen is one of the most active rooms of a contemporary home, so it’s important to fit the family’s activities to the space. “We want to know how the space will be used,” Courtright insists, including how often groceries are bought and whether they are bought in bulk in order to configure storage space. Kitchens may include desk or homework space, a computer or a TV. Use dictates how the space is designed. “If the homeowner wants a computer in the kitchen, we might design the space so the screen is oriented so the parent can glance and see what the child is doing without leaving the cooking or cleaning area,” Roosevelt says. The remodeled kitchen should reflect the family’s lifestyle practices. “The new kitchen design has to be laid out with the room in full use in mind,” Roosevelt says. To that end, the homeowner might create a kitchen-usage schedule, that shows how the kitchen is used each day of the week—who is in it when, what they are doing, and where they do it. Homeowners should include activities they want to accommodate in the new kitchen like space for homework or shared cooking preparation. Knowing how you live or wish to live in your space will lead to a positive kitchen remodel. Take the time to catalogue everything and share it with your designer for best results.

Give Your Kitchen Cabinets and all your Wood Surfaces a New Lease on Life (ARA) – When Vicki Lewis decided her 15-year-old kitchen cabinets were beyond salvaging, she started pricing new cabinets and quickly discovered that replacing her cabinets would be too expensive. But she was not ready to give up. She was tired of looking at her worn, ugly cabinets. “Moisture from the coffee maker had damaged the surface of the overhead cabinet. The finish on the door to the trash can was completely worn off and streaked with dirty fingerprints, and the panels next to the dishwasher were just too disgusting to describe,” says Lewis. She began looking for a less expensive way to make her cabinets look like new. After spending years searching for a simple product that would clean, moisturize and renew her cabinets, she finally concluded that the only way to get what she wanted was to make it herself. So Lewis immersed herself in the strange new world (for her, anyway) of chemistry, pursuing a product that would make dry, dull, water-damaged wood look new again without leaving behind any oil or build-up. She wanted a product that would also keep the wood looking great for a long time. After consulting with woodworkers and antiques dealers (not to mention testing a multitude of different recipes), two formulas emerged as winners. Lewis introduced Touch of Oranges Wood Cleaner and Touch of Beeswax Wood Preserver in 1986, and they have been lifesavers for homeowners ever since. To restore kitchen cabinets, simply spray Touch of Orange Wood Cleaner onto the surface, and wait a few minutes for the formula to penetrate and moisturize the wood. Lightly rub with 0000 grade steel wool in the direction of the grain, and wipe with a soft terrycloth towel; repeat if necessary. Kitchen Problems Solved Award winning designers offer tips that could save your kitchen (ARA) - Building your kitchen seemed like it would be fun and easy, until you discovered that inconvenient, load-bearing beam, or how enormous the room felt when you knocked down that wall. Now you’ll have to spend a fortune on custom cabinets to deal with these pesky problems, right? Not always. According to kitchen designers, many of these problems can be solved with a little creativity and stock or semi-custom cabinetry. “Most people think the best kitchen is the one with the most embellishments or expensive products. But that’s not what makes a kitchen beautiful or easy to use,” says Andy Wells, senior director of product design and merchandising for Decora' cabinets, a line of semi-custom cabinets that are made in Jasper, Ind., and sold through a network of 1,000 dealers nationwide. The winners of this year’s “Design with Decora' Contest," taken from real kitchens created for clients by Decora’s dealers, illustrates how smart design can solve some of the most common problems kitchen builders and remodelers face. Problem #1: Lots of space and high ceilings. While large kitchens have all the space you’ll ever need, dividing it up into manageable portions is hard. “Fortunately, I had a client who believes in having only one focal point in the room, which in this case is the limestone mantle hood we created over the range,” says Neil Luck, of NHL Cabinets and Design in Long Beach, Calif., who won the “best kitchen in the nation” award from Decora' for this expansive but well-balanced kitchen. Luck used several strategies, including creating a separate butler’s pantry off the main kitchen space, containing a second dishwasher, a second large copper farmhouse sink, copper countertops, a wine chiller, pantry and cabinets which served as a built-in display area for the client’s extensive collection of crystal, china and antique linens. He kept most of the cabinets below countertop level to create open spaces with a clear sightline to the adjoining living room, he says. The very large, 72-inch refrigerator was covered with matching wood panels to tone down its impact. Triple-stack crown molding with black accents joined the cabinets to the high ceiling. The understated kitchen island with a black finish provided an important visual break, too. Ellen Cheever, a noted kitchen designer, educator, and writer for “Kitchen and Bath Design News” says, “We particularly liked how they used the stained glass windows around the hood to lighten the space.” Problem #2: No room for an island, and short on storage space. What do you do when you really want an island with seating, and the floor plan doesn’t allow it? In the case of this kitchen in Bloomington, Minn., named “best kitchen in the Midwest,” Decora' designer Tracy Foslien had a unique solution -- create a thin, asymmetrical island that juts the seating area just past the rest of the cabinets. “My client wanted lots of detail in the cabinetry, so everywhere we could, we added embellishments like columns, corbels and extra molding to make it look more like free standing furniture,” says Foslien, of Home Valu Interiors in Bloomington. Foslein used an eggshell finish to unify all the cabinetry combined with toile wallpaper in a cheerful cobalt blue and white. The tight proportions of the room were offset by the varying heights of the upper cabinets. “But the most impressive part of this kitchen is the sheer variety of materials that were used in the wall separating the living room from the kitchen. It was an archway, buffet, china cabinet and curio all in one,” says Mary Jo Peterson, a judge of the contest who is also a kitchen designer, educator and commentator for “Kitchen Design News.” Problem #3: A very long, very open space. Three-time contest winners and Decora' Designers Glen Lumia and Gustave Brunet had a big job to do with this kitchen in Haworth, N.J. The clients had taken down walls separating the dining area from the kitchen and living room, and wanted to create a large-scale space suitable for entertaining their large extended family. “The real challenge of this kitchen was to create a flowing space while maintaining a sense of separation between the kitchen and the adjacent rooms,” says Lumia, of Creative Design Construction in Northvale, N.J. “They did two very important things right in this room,” says Cheever. “First, they did not feel compelled to make the cabinets attached to the room’s architecture. So the cabinets don’t go up to the ceiling, and the cabinets don’t crowd the windows and important fixtures. Second, they resisted the temptation to make the island too big,” she adds. Details made the space special, like popping up the height of the sink and range, repeating circular windows, using light wood for the cabinets, creating an elegant wood hood and tilework, and using furniture-like accents, Cheever says. Problem #4: A very small kitchen space that is also a default entryway and dining room. With a floor plan that was doubling from just 100 square feet to over 200, this kitchen in Tavernier, Fla., “named Best Kitchen in the South,” presented quite a challenge for kitchen designer Kathy Ferguson at Palen cabinets in nearby Islamorda. “It is the first room visible when you enter the home, so it needed to be a showstopper,” Ferguson says. Furthermore, Ferguson had to deal with an intrusive, load-bearing column, a ceiling beam, and a scarcity of available wall space. She addressed this challenge with a room divider of dark cherry cabinets that incorporated beams and columns, stocked with drawers for pots, pans and trays. The kitchen’s island was designed with contrasting off-white cabinets, with pull out spice rack inserts, and fluted legs as embellishments. The design opens up into a dining area, where she added a bank of window seats made from Decora' cabinets under a large run of windows. “This design is very today, very modern,” says Penny Chin, a contest judge, noted kitchen designer, and writer for many kitchen design publications. “We loved her use of materials ... the combination of the dark, contemporary cabinets with the unusual river rock backsplash and the granite counters. She used the flexibility of Decora’s semi-custom system to make use of every square inch -- beautifully,” she adds.
